How can I give a gift only to first-time customers?

In this article, you’ll learn how to automatically reward first-time customers with a free gift by combining a gift offer with Shopify Flow.


Customer Tag rule


  1. Go to your offer's settings and add the "Customer tags" rule.


  1. Next, enter a tag that will match the same tag to the one in Shopify Flow. For example, "First order" and click the "+" icon to add the tag.


  1. Lastly, click "Includes" and select "Excludes".




Shopify Flow


  1. Go to Shopify Flow, click "Create workflow" and "Select a trigger".


  1. Search for "Customer joined segment" and select the trigger.


  1. Next, select the "Customers who have purchased at least once" segment.


  1. Hover your cursor over the first trigger and click the "+" icon. Then, select "Action".


  1. Search for "Customer tag" action and enter "First order" or the tag name you initially specified in the gift offer.


  1. Lastly, click the "+" icon to add the tag name to the action.


And that's it! With this setup, customers receive the gift only with their first purchase.


How it works: Returning customers are automatically tagged by Shopify Flow, allowing our app to exclude them from receiving the gift more than once.
